Why should marriage last forever?

When you live in a place with a 50 percent divorce rate, is "till death do you part" even a realistic concept? In a radical rethinking of matrimony, Mexico City's assembly is mulling a proposed civil code reform that would enable the city to issue marriage licenses with time limits.

The idea, explains assemblyman Leonel Luna, is to help couples avoid "the tortuous process of divorce." Instead, couples could opt for a renewable contract for a minimum two-year term, complete with provisions for the division of assets and custody of children. "If the relationship is not stable or harmonious," Luna says, "the contract simply ends." Luna says there could be a vote on the new marriage contracts by the end of the year.

Unsurprisingly, the Catholic Church, still fired up over Mexico City legalizing same-sex unions in 2009, is none too pleased with the move. Mexican archdiocese spokesman Hugo Valdemar told Reuters this week that "This reform is absurd. It contradicts the nature of marriage. It's another one of these electoral theatrics the assembly tends to do that are irresponsible and immoral." Because anything other than a lifetime binding contract between a man and woman is hooey!

There's something irresistible about the notion of a love that can last forever. But matrimony has always existed as both a business relationship as well as a romantic one. Sure, plenty of arranged marriages have led to deep and lasting love, but they've also been built on practical social alliances between families. The blending of fortunes, the rearing of children -- they all factor into the culture of marriage. Just ask Patti Stanger. It's not just about eternal ardor. So why not make it easier for couples to openly acknowledge another practical aspect of marriage ? that it doesn't always last until one person gets the privilege of burying the other one?

Love, even under the best of circumstances, is not a static condition. Even if you're with the same person, the relationship you're in at 24 isn't the one you're going to be in at 64. And though it may sound harsh to subject it to periodic review, there is in fact both a pleasantly incentivizing reason to do so and a luxuriously liberating one as well. Think of any couple you've ever known -- or possibly participated in -- in which domesticity was taken as Let Yourself Go pass. Partnered life doesn't have the urgent frisson of early dating, but it's not an excuse to stop putting in the work, either. How different might the experience of marriage be if both participants in it were subject to periodic, mutual review? The chance to say, here's what's working, here's what's changed, here's what needs improvement? The opportunity, even, to say, maybe it's time to move on? Why not acknowledge that a great five-year run could be more satisfying than a 30-year sentence? After all, we leave jobs and houses and quietly distance ourselves from old friends all the time, and it's rarely considered failure. Instead it's understood to be part of growth and the nature of life. So why is permanence so highly prized? Why is endurance equated with commitment?

Not everything about the temporary marriage idea is perfect -- it certainly could make it easier for partners to absolve themselves of responsibility when the going gets tough, either because of money, kids or any number of real-world challenges. But guess what? Marriages bust up all the time over those issues anyway, and with plenty messy consequences.

In recent years, I've been to a few unions where the couple has substituted the phrase "as long as we both shall live" with "as long as we both shall love." The idea of life outlasting love, especially right when romance is fresh and new and being celebrated, is a harsh one. And endings, unmistakably, bring heartache. The notion that the person you've pledged yourself to might opt not to re-up your contract is a painful one. But it could also be a very freeing one. Because staying together would then become a matter less of obligation than one of ever-renewing choice. And within the scary yet already quite real prospect of love dying and marriage ending, there would be the chance to freely and openly choose each other on an ongoing basis. To say, if I had to do it again, I would. And in fact, I still do.

Sexy sons thanks to mom

Thursday, September 29, 2011

In Zebra Finches, as in most other bird species, both parents contribute to offspring rearing. The social partner of a female, however, is not always the biological father of the young. If the opportunity arises, females will choose to pair with partners other than their primary mate ? with the interesting result that the offspring of different fathers have different qualities. And, as evolutionary ecologists from the University of Zurich and biologists from Macquarie University in Sydney have discovered, offspring sired by an extra-pair partner develop larger color ornaments and are more attractive to females than their social half-brothers.

Extra-pair males are not more attractive

Up to now, the quality differences between social and extra-pair offspring have generally been assumed to reflect the genetic superiority of the extra-pair male. Indeed, females are believed to engage in extra-pair copulation with genetically superior males to obtain better genes for their offspring. Now, Barbara Tschirren, professor for evolutionary ecology at the University of Zurich, and her team have challenged the idea of the exceptional male. In a study published in Proceedings of the Royal Society the researchers demonstrate that -- despite the observed quality differences -- the fathers of attractive sons are neither better looking nor genetically superior.

The first eggs receive preferential treatment

According to the study, attractive sons are not the result of exceptional genes; rather, their enhanced ornamentation is due to the mother's investment in the eggs. Tschirren was able to demonstrate that maternal resource investment decreases steadily over the course of the laying sequence of a Zebra Finch, with eggs laid early in a clutch being larger and containing more nutrients and hormones. Favoring early eggs and the first hatchlings is a worthwhile investment for the mother as these offspring have a demonstrably higher chance of survival. "It appears that there is strong competition among males to fertilize these valuable eggs early in a female's laying sequence," explains lead author Barbara Tschirren. "They try to exploit the female's egg investment bias to ensure a head start for their own offspring." She hypothesizes that sperm competition might decide the battle, with males with faster sperm being able to fertilize the most valuable eggs.

Free Money Finance: Have You Ever Worked More than One Job at ...

Here's a startling statistic from the Wall Street Journal:

7.3 million Americans hold more than one job simultaneously according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

I have never held more than one job at a time since I graduated college. I did have two for some time while I was in high school, but that was only in the summer. I think holding down more than one job would be pretty brutal to manage -- assuming at least one of them was full-time. Then again, this isn't that much different than developing a side business while you're working a job too, is it?

Of course if it meant the difference between my family eating or not eating, I'd do what was needed. But I couldn't imagine a long-term situation where I held more than one job. I think my sanity would quickly leave me.

Any of you ever held more than one job at a time? How did you manage/cope?

Health and Fitness ? How To Deal With the Cause Of Pain And ...

?Loss of brain balance causes mechanical imbalance which negatively alters nerve function. When nerve function is negatively altered, physiology is altered and aging accelerates. Disease symptoms are not early warning signs, rather, they are the last to come and the first to go.?Dr. Virgil Chrane, founder of the Alphabiotics wellness and stress relief system.

Throughout the modern medical world, the word ?therapy? is commonly thought of as a procedure designed to relieve symptoms. There are many forms of therapy in the medical world but they tend to fall short when one looks at the big picture. Most forms of therapy in modern medicine don?t educate the patient about the?importance?of symptoms and pain within our metabolic system.

Symptoms and pain are very necessary communications from our body to let us know that something is wrong. I caution you to not dismiss that fact as obvious, because modern allopathic medicine, more times than not, simply treat symptoms and numb the pain (silence the communication).

We all dislike pain, but masking our symptoms by taking drugs is either downright irresponsible. If you are driving, and veer into oncoming traffic and people are blowing their horns at you in a desperate attempt to get you back on the right side of the road, are you going to turn up the radio, or put ear plugs in? Of course not! So why would you do that to your body?s communication?

When you begin to understand the real function of pain, you will see it is much more effective to use the warning signs your body gives you, instead of masking them. Then you can embrace these warnings, analyze them and figure out the underlying cause. This is how pain and symptoms should be effectively utilized.

It is a clinical fact that in our modern age, every generation is dying younger and living with more and more illness. This is because our society as a whole is so myopic, we are focusing only on materialistic gain, and neglect the balance that is so necessary for continued survival. We are simply not wired to deal with the constant, low-level stress from day to day. Our lifestyles have changed so drastically from even fifty years ago, that a person from the era of Martin Luther King, Jr would probably think they have landed on an alien planet, were they to time travel to the twenty-first century.

I will boldly say that modern medicine is simply dropping the ball when it comes to understanding how to help people cope with modern stress. This is almost certainly due to the ignoble motives of Big Pharma, namely profit. There is simply more money in treating the symptoms so you keep returning for more, than treating the underlying cause of stress and disease.

We are all different, which means there is no ?silver bullet? that takes care of everyone, and we have seen how one single drug will affect five people in five different ways. In fact, to make a medical diagnosis, one must first establish a norm then conform everyone to that very questionable standard. At best, a diagnosis is an educated guess.

According to a national study (if you have the source of this study it would be good) we now know that up to 80% of medical diagnoses are incorrect. That means 80% of the population are on drugs they shouldn?t using, or having surgeries that they don?t need. That is astounding. If that data doesn?t concern you, it should!

We live in a time of constant negative bombardment form radio. television, internet and crushing on-the-job pressure. We are getting more and more disconnected with ourselves, and we are getting ill and dying in droves. My point is this: Take time to listen to your body and become in touch with it. The future lies with the balanced man and woman. To live a balanced, healthy life we must first be physiologically balanced. Removing physical, chemical and emotional stress from your life means a happy, healthy, symptom free life. If you have ailments, listen to your own body instead of blindly trusting a stranger who charges you over a hundred dollars to quickly assess and numb your body?s symptoms. Scientists have shown that we should live until a hundred and twenty years old without ailments. Like a flame that is strong until the very end and merely flickers out, you should be living equally strong. Listen to your body, figure out and deal with the root cause of your ailments (huge hint: stress is likely involved,) and begin living a natural, wholesome life. You won?t regret it.

PFT: Indy columnist calls for team to sign Favre

Jim HarbaughAP

San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh is taking some heat for some questionable fourth-quarter decisions in the 49ers? 27-24 overtime loss to the Cowboys on Sunday.

The decision that?s drawing the most attention is keeping the three points on the board after the Cowboys were penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct on David Akers? 55-yard field goal with 11 minutes to go in the fourth quarter. If Harbaugh had wanted to, he could have taken the three points off the board and put the 49ers? offense back on the field with a new set of downs, giving them the chance to drive for a touchdown and a 14-point lead or, at the very least, take some more time off the clock before putting Akers back in for another field goal attempt.

Harbaugh chose to stand pat, however, and he said afterward that he thought being ahead two scores in the fourth quarter was enough.

?The thinking behind that at the time was to have the two-score advantage at that point,? Harbaugh said. ?Felt that we would be able to get off the field and that would lead to a victory.?

In general, Harbaugh seemed like he was playing it very safe in the fourth quarter. For starters, he decided to send Akers in for that 55-yard field goal instead of going for it on fourth-and-1. Then he decided not to put his offense back on the field after the Cowboys? penalty gave the 49ers an automatic first down. According to AdvancedNFLStats.com, which analyzes plays based on how they affect a team?s expected probability of winning the game, both of those decisions were mistakes.

It?s also worth considering that after Harbaugh decided to take the Cowboys? penalty on the ensuing kickoff, he could have called for an onside kick from the 50-yard line, rather than just booting it through the end zone for a touchback. All he would have been risking is about 20 yards of field position if the Cowboys had recovered the onside kick. But, again, Harbaugh decided to play it safe.

Harbaugh made another tactical mistake late in the game: The 49ers still had two timeouts left after they stopped the Cowboys on a third down with 43 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, and they should have immediately called timeout and forced the Cowboys to kick the field goal then. Instead, they allowed the Cowboys to let the clock run down to just four seconds remaining before kicking the game-tying field goal that sent the game into overtime on the final play of the fourth quarter. If Harbaugh had called timeout with 43 seconds left, the Cowboys would have had to kick their field goal right then, and then kick off to Ted Ginn, the 49ers? dangerous return man, with 38 seconds left ? and even if Ginn didn?t get a big return, the 49ers? offense would have had time to try to get into field goal range for a game-winning field goal of their own at the end of the fourth quarter.

But instead Harbaugh let the Cowboys control the clock, they controlled it effectively, and they won.

Photography ? Did You Know? | A Fun Website Tips And Tricks Sports ...

Photography is painting with light! It?s been said that photography is the one art where you don?t need to go to school, nothing separates the pro from the amateur other skill a keen eye or the right moment. Give a camera to a child and they?ve cracked it, give the same child a keyboard and they?ll get back to you in due time.

Most photographs are created using a camera , which uses a lens to focus the scene?s visible wavelengths of light into a reproduction of what the human eye would see. The process of creating photographs is called photography .

The great thing about photography is its outward focus (puns and semi-puns are so hard to avoid) on the world around us, not the art itself. Moving from hobby photography to professional photography is a big jump. It?s a jump not just because your ability to pay your mortgage and feed your family will now depend entirely on your talent with a camera and your skills at marketing those talents.

For me photography is about ?collecting? experiences and allowing myself to be more than a fly on the wall in my subjects? lives. I don?t think photography is dead, I think photography is an extremely young art form. I also look at the history of photography and see that many of its milestones have been based on the technology of the time.

Photography is going through an exciting transition period as many film photographers are beginning to explore the new capabilities made possible with digital cameras. Traditional aspects such as the fundamental techniques and lens equipment have remained the same, however others are markedly different. Photography is acquired when weather conditions, sun angle, and, when applicable, water levels are optimal to ensure that photographs will be suitable for a variety of purposes using standard photogrammetric techniques.

Natural light in photography is crucial if you want to take great portraits. Many assume this means the time of day in which she can shoot her portraits is limited. Photography is used to preserve memories of favorite times, to capture special moments, to tell stories, to send messages, and as a source of entertainment. Photography is an art of particularity, but this doesn?t mean that photography must be from ?outside in. If photography has too much natural accident, it will hardly carry visual dynamic. But if it has too much photographer intervention and manipulation of the subject, it will paralyze the expression of the subject?s essence.

Once you?ve gotten your head around this and started shooting a few pictures, you might find that photography is quite fun and interesting. At first glance it would seem that unless you are a full-time adventure athlete, adventure photography is something that you will have little opportunity to apply yourself to? However, nothing could be further from the truth. When learning how to shoot action photos, there are many ways you can begin practicing and honing your skills when you are far from the mountains or wild rivers.

Some are able to select a wonderful location to shoot along with having the ?artistic eye? to use the natural backdrop to obtain the best photographs possible. Pinhole photography is great fun and it can be the most serious kind of photography. There is the freedom from vying for the latest and the greatest the industry has to offer, and the freedom from the delusion that technically ever more perfect equipment is required for great photography.

Remote photography is used to learn more about things like bears? use of naturally-occurring bear rubs and how they respond to baited hair traps. Information from this work will be used to improve sampling methods and understand bear behavior. Photography is all about selection, first through the viewfinder and second when you look at the results. As long as there?s selection involved, there?s room for art ? if the artist can pull it off. Good photography is all about seeing.

Input relating ?classical? portraiture to photography is not so easy to find. Though we may not want to take this kind of photograph, it still seems that we could learn a lot from the kind of discussion given here. Photography is also increasingly asserting itself on the auction block as an important investment. And its prices in the galleries and at the major fairs reflect its serious status. Photography is finally escaping any dependence on what is in front of a lens, but it comes at the price of its special claim on a viewer?s attention as ?evidence? rooted in reality. As gallery material, photographs are now essentially no different from paintings concocted entirely from an artist?s imagination, except that they lack painting?s manual touch and surface variation.

Underwater photography is becoming an exciting field of unexplored areas. Other photographers specialize in areas such as portrait, commercial and industrial, scientific, news, or fine arts photography. Photography is a customer service business. Whether you need family portraits, pet portraits, events coverage or complete wedding packages.

The most compelling part of digital photography is the idea of showing pictures to people wherever they are, as long as they are in front of a computer connected to the Web.

The overwhelming majority of older photographs are catalogued under the term ?albumen prints? ? the most common type of 19 th-century photographic print. Additional headings are assigned describing the typical cardboard mounts to which these images are attached ? stereographs, cabinet card photographs, and cartes-de-viste.

Finally, If you plan on working with older photos, establish handling procedures and adhere to them whenever photographs are being used. View photographs in a clean, uncluttered area, and handle them with clean hands. Most 1860s-90s paper photographs are albumen. Even non-collectors associate horse-and-buggy and Old West images with the soft, sentimental tones that were produced by the albumen process. If only photographs are stored in a given area, 30-40% RH is best. If photographs are stored with paper, parchment, or leather materials, it may be necessary to maintain 40-50% RH to avoid placing unwanted stress on non-photographic materials.

Pirates attack second tanker in two days near Omani port (Reuters)

DUBAI (Reuters) ? A chemical oil tanker foiled a hijack attempt by pirates near the Omani port of Salalah on Sunday, a day after a tanker and crew were snatched from inside the port in front of the coast guard.

"Pirates in a skiff chased and fired upon a chemical tanker," according to the International Maritime Bureau's anti-crime arm. "The pirates made several attempts to board the tanker and finally aborted the attack due to the evasive maneuvers made by the tanker."

On Saturday, pirates successfully seized the empty MV Fairchem Bogey chemical oil tanker from its anchorage at the port in the mouth of the Gulf of Aden, taking 21 Indian crew members hostage and heading south to Somalia, Mumbai-based Anglo Eastern Ship Management said. [ID:nL4E7JK047]

"We can now confirm that the Fairchem Bogey is now in Somali waters," the tanker manager said in a statement.

"The Master has been in contact with us, reconfirming safety of the crew. We are still waiting to make first contact with the hijackers."

Anglo-Eastern said the Omani Coast Guard approached the vessel shortly after it was seized from its anchorage in the port but backed off when the pirates warned that the captured crew might be harmed.

The Bogey, which had armed guards on board when it sailed through the Gulf of Aden on its way to unload at the Saudi port of Al Jubail on August 18, was unprotected when it was taken on August 21 after dropping the security team off in the Omani capital Muscat on August 10, the company said

Several oil tankers have been attacked in the pirate-infested Gulf of Aden, with their valuable cargoes being used by pirates to demand ransoms.
