PERSPECTIVES ON CANCER #28: Living With Dying | INTO THE ...

LIVING WITH DYING

by

Gayle Walters Rose

?When my mother?s best friend, Katherine, became ill with stomach cancer, her daughter enlisted Katherine?s friends to be of support as she went?through her chemotherapy treatment and subsequent recuperation. ?Her daughter lived out-of-state and had a medical practice and could not be with her day-to-day.

I had known Katherine my entire life. ? She was one of the?most positive, bright lights I had ever known.? Her daughter and I had spent?much time?together as children, which included many hours swimming in the beautiful lake that they lived on.? Katherine?s husband had died many years prior.

Her daughter was very organized and efficient with setting up people in shifts to take turns staying with Katherine during her illness.? Sometimes this included remaining overnight with her.? But Katherine had a very independent nature, even at age 87, and at times would insist that she was OK and send us home.? Her daughter had tried her best to convince Katherine to move to North Carolina and stay with her family, but Katherine always refused. ?She had been there for over 50 years. ?During one afternoon, she confided in me that she would never leave her beloved home on the lake.? ?The house had an enclosed porch that overlooked the?water and we would sit out there for hours as we talked and relaxed.? Her eyes would occasionally scan the lake and she would comment on a bird that had caught her eye or an activity by a neighbor around the water?s edge.

We were able to share ourselves like never before.? She regaled me with all kinds of stories from her past and shared intimate feelings. ?She told me she was totally at peace and was not fearful of death. ?I felt somehow as if I were a vessel for her to pour her heart into and was so grateful that I could be of service to her in this way.

I marveled at her serenity during this difficult time. ?There was no ?battle?, just gentle, quiet acceptance and the allowing of what was. ?She illustrated to me what it meant to live in the moment. ?Her ease and even emotions were a gift to me as well.

One day she tired as we had been sitting on the porch for quite some time and so we retired to her bedroom. ?Climbing into her bed, I propped myself next to her as we watched television.? A short time later, as I noticed her eyes getting heavy, I told her I would leave and let her sleep.? Lowering myself down on the bed so I could look into her eyes, I held her hands in mine?and told her how much I loved her.? She smiled at me with beaming love in her clear, sweet, blue eyes?and told me how beautiful I was.? Tears pooled in my eyes as I realized, in that moment, what grace she possessed.

Katherine died quietly in her sleep with hospice in attendance several months after her diagnosis. ?Her bedroom window was open to the lake.

How To Buy Real Estate Without A Bank

Most people will not even their dream home or property dreams because they think they have to pay everything at once. Wrong! You can buy houses and land with little or none before, and even in the absence of a check or credit card. If you like fighting the most hard-working people to pay rent and earn their livelihood, you need to start immediately and do something for your future. Whatever you pay in rent is gone forever. Build a house or paying your property areActivities and give the property after it is paid.

The secret is: the financing of the owner. While still in college, I was renting a small house in the city for $ 250 per month. Sure, I had a place to live, but beyond that there was nothing I was ever to get out of the $ 250 I paid month after month. Then I found an ad in the newspaper and left the rent trap. And 'lowered my monthly payments of $ 175 per month, and I began to pay out of my seat, rather than pay the rent!

OwnerFunding means that the owner of the property you can pay as a loan. After payment you will receive the deed to the property. Most owners do not care who they sell a. Thus, almost never a credit check. In my opinion, credit reports are not cheat. As long as you can make your monthly payments, offer loans to those who sell you the owner?

Low down payments or time. Many features are offered low-income or down time. And if you happen to find onewith a higher down payment, just ask! Many sellers are willing to reduce or even waive a deposit. However, you should be able to at least the first monthly payment and closing fee to pay for the document or documents. Speaking of paperwork, make sure, signed contracts and track your payments. Avoid paying in cash!

Once you begin making payments, most sellers will be able to start with the property. Be sure to ask! Never go about it! If youBuying a home with owner financing, you can begin to live and to stop paying rent immediately (check your lease)! Then you can pay your property, but only paying for the privilege to live there. If you buy land only, check the mobile homes are permitted. You can buy cheap mobile homes almost everywhere. They should not be moved to the Recycle Bin! Save up the money wasted in rent for the house of your dreams.

As you can see, no bank or bad creditReport can prevent you from your own home or a piece of land! All you have to do is to go looking for real estate ads and search for key words such as "terms" or "owner financing" or "financing available" or "owners bring will be. "And even if you find a house or a property without financing, you can always make an offer and ask if the owner would be willing to finance!

Calipari, Rose settle to avoid Memphis lawsuit

(AP) ? Coach John Calipari and former Memphis guard Derrick Rose agreed last year to pay $100,000 to avoid a lawsuit over the Tigers' season that ended in the 2008 Final Four with the wins later vacated by the NCAA.

According to a settlement signed May 28, 2010, with attorneys representing some Memphis season ticket holders, not only did Calipari and Rose agree to pay $100,000, but Calipari and Memphis athletic director R.C. Johnson committed to repaying Final Four bonuses.

The Commercial Appeal first obtained a copy of the agreement Thursday from the University of Memphis under Tennessee's open record laws.

Attorneys Martin Zummach, Frank L. Watson III and William Burns represented "certain ticket holders" who argued they bought tickets under false pretenses and threatened to sue. They argued they also made donations to the Tiger Scholarship Fund not knowing Memphis might be charged in the future with alleged misconduct by Rose, Calipari and the athletic director, which potentially could hurt the value of their tickets for 2009-10 and future seasons.

Calipari, Rose and Johnson all denied any responsibility in the settlement.

The coach left for Kentucky after the 2008-09 season. Memphis already had been served with an NCAA notice of an investigation, which didn't become public knowledge until weeks after his departure. The NCAA did not find Calipari guilty of any violations during his tenure as coach of the Tigers.

The NCAA ordered Memphis in August 2009 to vacate its NCAA-record 38 wins and eliminate mentions of the Final Four and appearance in the national championship game after finding the university guilty of using an ineligible player believed to be Rose. That player had been ruled retroactively ineligible for the 2007-08 season because of questions over his SAT score.

Memphis lost that title game to Kansas in overtime.

The settlement required the $100,000 to be paid within 14 days of signing the agreement into an account held until Dec. 31, 2010, and controlled by a third party. If no other lawsuits were filed against Calipari, Rose and Johnson, the agreement allowed for the money and interest to be paid out "as they agree among themselves."

In the settlement, Calipari agreed to donate the bonus he received to the university's scholarship fund over four years, a total of $232,000 after taxes. The deal also mentions that Rose, now with the NBA's Chicago Bulls, will consider making a "suitable" donation to the scholarship fund within five years.

University attorney Sheri Lipman told The Commercial Appeal she believes Calipari made a donation of $58,000 last fall, the first in the four-year plan. She wasn't aware if Rose had made a donation.

Johnson received a bonus of $105,875, but repayment already was called for by the language in his contract. In the agreement, the athletic director agreed to meet those obligations.

Smith leads No. 16 West Virginia over UConn, 43-16 (AP)

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. ? Geno Smith threw for 450 yards and four touchdowns and No. 16 West Virginia navigated through another slow start to beat Connecticut 43-16 in their Big East opener Saturday.

West Virginia (5-1, 1-0) struggled to a 10-9 halftime lead before erupting for 23 points in a 7:35 span of the third quarter to take control.

Connecticut (2-4, 0-1) was picked apart on defense for the second straight week and its offense was limited to 275 total yards.

UConn quarterback Johnny McEntee was chased around the field all game. His third-quarter fumble led to a touchdown that gave West Virginia the momentum for good.

West Virginia struggled out of the gate for the fifth time in six games, mustering little early against a Connecticut defense that gave up 479 passing yards a week ago to Western Michigan. The 10 first-half points were the lowest for the Mountaineers this season.

During a timeout early in the third quarter, West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen waved his hands up and down while lecturing his skill-position players at the back of the bench.

They responded ? with a nudge from the defense.

McEntee was driving UConn toward a go-ahead score midway through the third when he was hit on the run by cornerback Pat Miller. The ball popped loose, freshman linebacker Jewone Snow grabbed it and went 83 yards down the right sideline before being caught at the Connecticut 12.

It was the spark the Mountaineers needed. Smith, who completed 27 of 45 passes, found Tavon Austin on a post pattern in the back of the end zone two plays later for a 17-9 lead.

Connecticut got just two first downs the rest of the game.

For West Virginia, the points kept coming.

After the Mountaineers got the ball back at their 16 on the next series, Smith hit Stedman Bailey with a pass at the West Virginia 36. Bailey sidestepped Ty-meer Brown and went the rest of the way untouched to put West Virginia ahead by double digits for good.

Bruce Irvin sacked McEntee in the end zone for a safety late in the third. West Virginia got the ball back at midfield and scored in eight plays, with Brad Starks making a leaping catch over Dwayne Gratz for a 22-yard TD for a 33-9 lead.

Bailey later added a 27-yard scoring catch. He finished with seven catches for 178 yards, his fourth straight game of more than 100 receiving yards. Ivan McCartney had six catches for 131 yards.

Connecticut's only touchdown was a gift. Paul Millard relieved Smith in the fourth quarter and promptly threw an interception that Brown returned for a score.

Heavy-underdog Connecticut was effective moving the ball early. The Huskies' held the ball for 11 minutes of the first quarter and their first four drives went into West Virginia territory.

But they failed to find the end zone after three drives reached the West Virginia 20. Dave Teggart kicked first-half field goals of 40, 53 and 22 yards.

McEntee finished 21 of 37 for 193 yards.

Connecticut's Byron Jones was called for holding on a second-quarter interception he made in the end zone. Three plays later, West Virginia freshman Dustin Garrison burst through the line for a 14-yard scoring run to put the Mountaineers ahead 10-6.

That was one of few bright spots for Garrison, who last week ran for 291 yards against Bowling Green. He was limited to 80 yards on 18 carries Saturday.

Gold to flow from Congo's cloud-capped hills (Reuters)

TWANGIZA, Democratic Republic of Congo (Reuters) - ? High in the hills of Congo's troubled northeast, a modern mine is ready to pour gold for the first time in five decades.

For the past year, Canada's Banro has been defying the odds to build its $209 million Twangiza mine in a region known as much for its conflicts as for its mineral riches.

Mining equipment was shipped from Australia, China and South Africa, trucked more than 1,000 km into the heart of Africa, before being assembled 2,500 meters up in near-vertical terrain sometimes shrouded in clouds.

The feat, gold miners hope, marks the start of a new period for mining in the eastern reaches of Democratic Republic of Congo.

Major mining groups Randgold Resources, AngloGold Ashanti and others are also on track to cash in on reserves that could make the DRC one of Africa's largest gold producers in the next decade.

Banro bought their concession from private European investors in 1996, at the start of a turbulent political period, when successive wars tore the region apart and left more than five million dead.

Today, eight years after the end of the last conflict, South Kivu province is still haunted by armed groups fighting the Congolese army, with both sides accused of human rights abuses.

GOLD BELT

The Twangiza mine was built in a vast region with virtually no infrastructure, and where the most visible foreigners are humanitarian workers.

"We're creating something, and that's a big motivation," Gary Chapman, Banro's vice president of operations, said.

"We're doing something that everyone said was impossible," he added, gesturing with a smile at the gold plant behind him.

First gold pour is due on October 10, with production ramping up to 120,000 ounces per year by early 2012, Chapman says, but the Twangiza project is just the start.

By 2014 they hope to open three more mines on their concession along a 200 km gold belt -- which Chapman likens to the Ashanti belt in Ghana -- and hit production of 400,000 ounces a year.

If everything goes according to plan Chapman hopes the company can become a big player, particularly as only 6 percent of their 5,311 square km concession has so far been explored.

"All the world's biggest mining companies were built on gold belts, not individual mines," he said.

NO EASY WIN

Breaking ground in Congo's hostile business environment has been tough.

The company has had to face corrupt officials, a lack of governmental institutions and even a bout of international arbitration over their rights to the concession in the late 1990s, a case the company won.

The policy has been one of sticking to the rules and trying to understand the local context, according to Thinus Vorster, Banro's vice president of engineering and project development.

He says the company is acutely aware that other companies attracted by Congo's vast mineral riches have had their fingers burned after falling foul of the government.

Canadian copper miner First Quantum found itself thrown out of the country after Congolese mining contracts were "revisited" by the government. That case is in international arbitration.

Banro too may find itself being called back to the table by the government to renegotiate terms and conditions, particularly after the company begins production, according to Jean-Claude Kibala, the vice governor of South Kivu province and an ally of president Jospeh Kabila.

The Banro deal was agreed to by Congo from a "position of weakness," Kibala told Reuters in an interview, referring to the turbulent political times the country faced in the late 1990s.

The Banro contract, which includes exemptions and tax breaks for up to 10 years from the start of production, means the province is only indirectly benefiting through job creation and the opening up of eastern Congo's business sector, he said.

"When we have a stable situation (in the east), we'll certainly see what the province can get back," Kibala said.

Banro's Chapman says the risk the company took by investing in Congo means the deal is a fair one.

"It's election year, if (talk of re-negotiation) carries on after election year, then we have a problem, but if we have to we'll go back and start talking," he said.

Congo is gearing up for only its second national polls since the end of the war, with Kabila likely to be re-elected, despite growing unpopularity over his failure to bring complete stability or tackle rampant corruption.

Some analysts fear the vote, which is likely to be hotly contested and is already facing questions about credibility, could spark new unrest, and create new dangers for investors.

Banro also faces problems from artisanal miners who represent the vast majority of eastern Congo's mining sector and who have worked the Twangiza deposits for decades.

The company was forced to move more than 1,200 artisanal workers before they could begin construction, employing many and finding others alternative employment.

No sooner had they gone, more moved in, and now around 300, some children, continue to work at the bottom of the steep sided valley which will be the tailing dam, separated from the site by coils of razor wire.

The scruffily dressed and mud-spattered artisanal miners are hopeful that they too may find jobs with Banro.

One of the miners, Chuma Chigorombo, says with few other employment opportunities in the area, they have little choice.

"Everybody needs jobs. We can't expect to have good relations (with Banro) until we have jobs. When that happens, things will improve," Chigorombo said.

But with the construction phase at Twangiza almost over and employee numbers dropping to 600 from over 2,000, opportunities are unlikely says Chapman, adding that the company is waiting for the government to move the miners on.

(Editing by Eric Onstad)

(This story is corrected in the sixth paragraph to make clear Banro bought concession from investors, not the government.)

concrete floor finishing More Details about concrete floor finishing here.

Tweet This Many homeowners -- and business owners are unhappy with their concrete flooring, but do not know about concrete floor finishing. This is a process that can completely transform your business environment and really impress your customers. Most times we think of concrete floors as a dull, gray and overall "blah" floor cover that does not have any options, when actually the opposite is true. Depending on your needs, you can hire a reputable contractor to completely makeover your interior. There are so many eye-catching and diverse options for this type of service, it boggles the mind!

Concrete is one of the most durable surfaces you could possibly have in your auto garage, warehouse or other industrial shop. However, business owners with other professions can greatly benefit as well. Concrete floors can make for a bold and dynamic look for automobile showrooms, contemporary office lobbies and galleries of any sort. These floor choices are very long-lasting and do not require the frequent maintenance you may encounter with wood flooring and will look much more attractive than linoleum or plastic choices. The durability of concrete makes this floor finish an incredible value, especially when you hire a contractor who has years of experience.

You may be thinking "Umm, its concrete -- how nice can it really look?" You will be astounded at the look and feel you can achieve by finishing your current concrete floors. If you want trendy modern -- it can be done. If you want classic and traditional -- a great concrete refinisher can do that to. The versatility of this material is truly staggering as you can basically choose a color or stain in any shade or color to create a bold new look, or to complement your current interior palette. Certain finishes can resemble other materials like brick or tile to create a homier and earthy feel, or you can go with a more elegant and polished finish that can be crafted to look like more costly materials such as marble.

As you can see, a concrete floor finish is a no-brainer for the prudent and savvy business owner. By making an affordable investment in your building, you can enjoy long lasting value for years to come. You need not have boring flooring; let your creative juices flow and make a small renovation to create a whole new look that is sure to impress. Not only will your current customers enjoy the change, you can also astonish any potential new clients that pass through your doors.
