Future warming likely to be on high side of climate projections, analysis finds

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? Climate model projections showing a greater rise in global temperature are likely to prove more accurate than those showing a lesser rise, according to a new analysis by scientists at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). The findings, published in this week's issue of Science, could provide a breakthrough in the longstanding quest to narrow the range of global warming expected in coming decades and beyond.

NCAR scientists John Fasullo and Kevin Trenberth, who co-authored the study, reached their conclusions by analyzing how well sophisticated climate models reproduce observed relative humidity in the tropics and subtropics.

The climate models that most accurately captured these complex moisture processes and associated clouds, which have a major influence on global climate, were also the ones that showed the greatest amounts of warming as society emits more greenhouse gas into the atmosphere.

"There is a striking relationship between how well climate models simulate relative humidity in key areas and how much warming they show in response to increasing carbon dioxide," Fasullo says. "Given how fundamental these processes are to clouds and the overall global climate, our findings indicate that warming is likely to be on the high side of current projections."

Moisture, clouds, and heat

The world's major global climate models, numbering more than two dozen, are all based on long-established physical laws known to guide the atmosphere. However, because these relationships are challenging to translate into software, each model differs slightly in its portrayal of global climate. In particular, some processes, such as those associated with clouds, are too small to be represented properly.

The most common benchmark for comparing model projections is equilibrium climate sensitivity (ECS), or the amount of warming that eventually occurs in a model when carbon dioxide is doubled over preindustrial values. At current rates of global emission, that doubling will occur well before 2100.

For more than 30 years, ECS in the leading models has averaged around 5 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius). This provides the best estimate of global temperature increase expected by the late 21st century compared to late 19th century values, assuming that society continues to emit significant amounts of carbon dioxide. However, the ECS within individual models is as low as 3 degrees F and as high as 8 degrees F (, leaving a wide range of uncertainty that has proven difficult to narrow over the past three decades.

The difference is important to reconcile, as a higher temperature rise would produce greater impacts on society in terms of sea level rise, heat waves, droughts, and other threats.

Clouds are one of the main sticking points, say the NCAR authors. Although satellites observe many types of clouds, satellite failure, observing errors, and other inconsistencies make it challenging to build a comprehensive global cloud census that is consistent over many years.

However, satellites perform better in measuring water vapor, and estimates of the global distribution of relative humidity have become more reliable. Relative humidity is also incorporated in climate models to generate and dissipate clouds.

Fasullo and Trenberth checked the distribution of relative humidity in 16 leading climate models to see how accurately they portray the present climate. In particular, they focused on the subtropics, where sinking air from the tropics produce very dry zones where most of the world's major deserts are located. The researchers drew on observations from two NASA satellite instruments -- the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) and Clouds and Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) -- and used a NASA data analysis, the Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA).

The seasonal drying in the subtropics and the associated decrease in clouds, especially during May through August, serve as a good analog for patterns projected by climate models.

"The dry subtropics are a critical element in our future climate," Fasullo says. "If we can better represent these regions in models, we can improve our predictions and provide society with a better sense of the impacts to expect in a warming world."

Accurate humidity yields higher future temperatures

Estimates based on observations show that the relative humidity in the dry zones averages between about 15 and 25 percent, whereas many of the models depicted humidities of 30 percent or higher for the same period. The models that better capture the actual dryness were among those with the highest ECS, projecting a global temperature rise for doubled carbon dioxide of more than 7 degrees F. The three models with the lowest ECS were also the least accurate in depicting relative humidity in these zones.

"Because we have more reliable observations for humidity than for clouds, we can use the humidity patterns that change seasonally to evaluate climate models," says Trenberth. "When examining the impact of future increases in heat-trapping gases, we find that the simulations with the best fidelity come from models that produce more warming."

The authors focused on climate models used for the 2007-08 assessment by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The next-generation models being used for the upcoming 2013-14 IPCC assessment were found to behave in a similar fashion, as described in a preliminary analysis by the authors in a supplement to their paper.

"In addition to providing a path forward and focus for improving models, results strongly suggest that the more sensitive models perform better, and indeed the less sensitive models are not adequate in replicating vital aspects of today's climate," write the authors in the paper.

The research was funded by NASA.

China calls Bo Xilai scandal a profound lesson

(AP) ? China's communists called the scandal surrounding disgraced politician Bo Xilai a "profound lesson" for the ruling party, as delegates gathered in Beijing on Wednesday on the eve of a key leadership congress.

The party's handling of Bo's case underlines the leadership's resolve to uphold integrity and prosecute corruption no matter how high ranking the culprits, said Cai Mingzhao, spokesman for the 18th national Communist Party congress.

Bo had been one of China's highest-profile politicians and a candidate for higher office when he fell from grace amid a scandal over his wife's involvement in the murder of a British businessman. Bo dropped from view and in September was expelled from the party. He is being prosecuted for yet-unspecified charges, though he's been accused of corruption, abuse of power and assisting in covering up his wife's case.

"Problems involving Bo Xilai ... and others are serious corruption cases among our party's high-ranking leading cadres, and have offered a profound lesson," Cai told a news conference.

The struggle against corruption remains long term, complex and extremely difficult, Cai said. The 18th national party congress, which opens Thursday, will thoroughly address the issue and its disciplinary arm will adopt new measures in education, prevention, supervision and punishment, he said.

Cai also cited Liu Zhijun, a former railways minister who was expelled from the party and faces corruption charges.

National party congresses are held once every five years, and this year's meeting will usher in a once-in-a-decade transition to a new generation of top officials led by Vice President Xi Jinping.

The congress comes as Xi faces calls from academics and other commentators to embark on political reforms from strengthening the rule of law to making the system more transparent.

Cai indicated that Communist Party rule was a key driving force behind China's success and that any political reforms would not detract from that.

"China has scored world-renowned development achievements. It speaks fully to the strong leadership of the (Communist Party) and the fact that the political party system of China suits China's national reality," Cai said.

"We have to unswervingly stick to the right path blazed by the party and the people in their long term practice. We should never be intimidated by any risks nor be confused by any distractions," he said.

Calls for political reform have occasionally been made and steps taken in recent years to strengthen the legal system and increase the government's responsiveness, but the moves were aimed at strengthening one-party rule. The party has allowed nonpartisan elections for the lowest-level village leadership posts, but it controls policymaking, and harasses and jails activists who call for multiparty democracy.

Over the coming week, in addition to selecting members of leading party bodies, the 2,270 delegates will hear and deliberate over the work of the party over the last five years, a party discipline report and revisions to the party constitution.

Give Your Continual Companion That Prolo... - Work On the Internet

Mobile phones have become a necessity rather than a luxury in modern living, and people have become more and more dependent on these wonder gadgets for all sorts of uses. Whereas in olden times, phones and even the old generation mobile phones were just instruments for long distance communication, oday even the lowest priced and minimum feature phone is much more than a phone. In today???s age, cell phones serve all sorts of multiple purposes in a person???s daily life and day by day, manufacturers are improving on the range of services that a cell phone provides.

The new generation smart phones are more of a computer than a phone, and they are serving more functions than a normal computer. They are your medium of entertainment, communication, and security. The provision of getting internet and other communication mediums in a little box held in your palm, and having the provision to use it from any corner of the world, makes your Smartphone your best companion at all times.

Sleep duration affects hunger differently in men and women

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? A new study suggests that increasing the amount of sleep that adults get could lead to reduced food intake, but the hormonal process differs between men and women.

"Restricting sleep in healthy, normal weight participants has limited effects on metabolic risk factors and may affect food intake regulating hormones differently in men and women," said Marie-Pierre St-Onge, PhD, FAHA, the study's principal investigator. "We were surprised by the lack of a significant effect of sleep on glucose and insulin, leptin, and sex differences in the hunger-stimulating hormone ghrelin and the satiety hormone GLP-1."

The study, appearing in the November issue of the journal SLEEP, tracked the sleep duration, glucose dysregulation, and hormonal regulation of appetite in 27 normal weight, 30- to 45-year-old men and women. Participants provided fasting blood draws, and they were studied under two sleep conditions: Short (4 hours) or habitual (9 hours). Short sleep increased total ghrelin levels in men but not women and reduced GLP-1 levels in women but not in men, a sex difference that has not been reported before. The results suggest that the common susceptibility to overeat during short sleep is related to increased appetite in men and reduced feelings of fullness in women.

"Our results point to the complexity of the relationship between sleep duration and energy balance regulation," St-Onge said. "The state of energy balance, whether someone is in a period of weight loss or weight gain, may be critical in the metabolic and hormonal responses to sleep restriction."

According to the authors, this is the largest controlled clinical investigation of the effects of sleep reduction on hormonal regulation of food intake. The results support a causal role of sleep duration on energy intake and weight control.

BBC iPlayer comes to Sky , Hell reports incoming frost

BBC iPlayer comes to Sky, Hell reports incoming frost

The BBC and Sky may represent polar, warring opposites of the broadcasting business, but that doesn't mean their technology platforms can't get along. Following a promise made all the way back in January, internet-connected Sky+HD boxes will be able to access BBC iPlayer from today. The service has been integrated into Sky's world-class program guide, with users even able to plump to catch available shows in high definition. The announcement also let slip that 4OD, the last remaining holdout to the service, will be added in early 2013. If you've yet to hook your Sky box up to the internet, you just need an Ethernet cable or wireless adapter -- but let's hope for your sake they aren't at opposite ends of your house.

Lifelong exercise keeps octogenarians fit - Mother Nature Network

Octogenarians who spend a lifetime doing endurance exercise have the aerobic capacity of 40-year-olds.

?

For their age, these ultra-athletes have the highest aerobic capacity ever measured, suggesting that lifetime endurance training may ward off age-related declines in fitness.

?

The findings also strike a more hopeful note than past work, which found that starting an exercise regimen in old age didn?t do much to boost aerobic capacity.

?

"These individuals' aerobic power was about 80 percent higher than the typical 80-year-old, and it was comparable to people forty and fifty years younger," said lead author Scott Trappe, an exercise researcher at Ball State University.

?

The nine elite, life-long cross-country skiers from Northern Sweden who participated in the study had dabbled in orienteering, running and cycling, but their primary passion was the snow sport, Trappe told LiveScience. The study included only male athletes. [7 Amazing Superhuman Feats]

?

In the experiment, the octogenarians rode exercise bikes that started out at slow speeds, but ramped up until the riders were too exhausted to keep going. All the while, the research team measured how much oxygen the athletes were using. (Researchers also monitored the riders for changes in the heart's electrical activity and blood pressure to make sure the exercisers were not in distress.) The point of exhaustion marked the riders? maximum oxygen capacity, or VO2 max.

?

The team also took pea-size muscle biopsies to measure the capacity of the mitochondria, the aerobic powerhouse of the muscle and other cells.

?

When compared with six healthy, sharp, but untrained Indiana octogenarians, the athletes had a VO2 max 80 percent higher, similar to that of men decades younger. VO2 max is a powerful predictor of heart attack risk, even more so than traditional risk factors like cholesterol, Trappe said.

?

Of course, the men weren't exactly slouches. All had been superb athletes when younger, including a 91-year-old who was once an Olympic cross-country ski champion.

?

?"They had the right stuff to begin with," Trappe said.

?

Still, the key was not the athletes? youthful elite level of exercise, but the fact that they kept it up, he said. "It's kind of a use-it-or-lose it type phenomenon," Trappe said.

?

In fact, some research has shown that elite athletes who give up their sport in older age suffer worse consequences than non-competitors. Marathon runners who retire to the couch show a steeper decline in oxygen capacity than people who have never exercised regularly.

?

The octogenarian findings suggest that even those with less athletic prowess can stay fit and healthy into old age, said Michael Joyner, an exercise researcher at the Mayo Clinic who was not involved in the study.

?

For mere mortals, doing a half-hour to an hour of vigorous exercise most days should keep aerobic capacity high enough to allow longer life and the ability to live independently well into the 80s, he added.

?

"This long decline into disability, it's not our biological destiny," he said.
