Ford to open Silicon Valley lab

(AP) ? Ford Motor Co. is the latest automaker to open a research lab in Silicon Valley, where it hopes to scout out new technology and keep ahead of trends.

The company said Friday that it plans to open the lab near Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., in the first few months of this year. It will employ around 15 people, including some recruited locally and others who will rotate in from Ford's headquarters in Dearborn.

Ford's Chief Technical Officer Paul Mascarenas said the company decided about a year ago that it needed a bigger presence in Silicon Valley.

"This is a very natural extension into one of the most innovative communities in the world," he said.

He said the lab will work on ways to better integrate phones and other personal devices into cars, as well as safety systems that alert drivers when they're approaching another car.

The lab will also solicit and test applications from independent programmers. One app Ford is currently studying can find an open parking space and reserve it. Another would improve weather reporting by transmitting signals when a car's rain-sensing wipers are triggered.

Mascarenas said the lab will also study larger issues, including population growth in developing countries like China and India, and how best to handle traffic in those countries.

The lab will work with Ford headquarters as well as its design studio in Southern California and its office at Microsoft Corp. in Washington. Microsoft and Ford jointly developed Ford's Sync voice-activated entertainment system and My Ford Touch touch-screen dashboard.

But Mascarenas said it's important that the lab be in Silicon Valley ? not Dearborn ? so employees feel free to experiment.

Ford joins several other automakers that have similar offices in Silicon Valley, including General Motors Co., BMW AG and the Renault-Nissan alliance.

K. Venkatesh Prasad, a senior technical leader at Ford who will commute between Dearborn and the new office, said Ford considered opening a Silicon Valley office in the past but the technology wasn't ready. Now, he said, the Sync platform makes it easier and faster to reprogram the car and update it with new applications. Ford introduced Sync four years ago.

"The car is finally a platform," Prasad said.

Asian stocks mostly lower on eurozone debt fears

HONG KONG - Concerns over Europe's debt crisis returned to the forefront on Thursday, leaving Asian markets mostly lower while the euro continued to be pressured by the dollar and yen.

Despite an upbeat set of economic data from the United States and Europe, dealers turned their attention to indebted Greece and Spain while banks deposited a record amount of cash with the European Central Bank, raising credit crunch fears.

Sydney finished 1.08 percent lower, or 45.1 points, to 4,142.70, Tokyo fell 0.83 percent, or 71.40 points, to end at 8,488.71, while Seoul lost 0.13 percent, or 2.48 points, to close at 1,863.74.

Hong Kong ended 0.46 percent, or 86.10 points, up at 18,813.41 while Shanghai ended down 0.97 percent, or 20.94 points, at 2,148.45.

Taipei added 0.68 percent, or 47.89 points, to 7,130.86.

In Greece, Prime Minister Lucas Papademos said the nation faced an "uncontrolled default" in March unless unions and employers can quickly agree on labour cost cuts.

At a round of meetings he said the labour issue would be key to an EU-IMF evaluation of Greece's economy later this month and determine the conclusion of a second bailout agreement for the country.

"Without the agreement and the funding linked to it, Greece faces an immediate danger of uncontrolled default in March," he warned.

There are fears that an uncontrolled default could infect other weak eurozone member states and threaten the whole euro project.

Dealers were also given a knock by news that the regional government of Valencia was late in repaying a 123 million euro debt to Deutsche Bank, leading to speculation Spain could be forced into a bailout.

Also, banks deposited a record 453.18 billion euros (US$591 billion) with the ECB on Tuesday, suggesting that banks remain reluctant to lend to each other amid ongoing market tension.

The figure broke a previous record set last week for the facility of 452.03 billion euros, the central bank said.

Heavy use of the facility suggests banks favour parking the money at low interest with the ECB rather than lending it to each other, fuelling worries that credit will dry up and exacerbate the region's cash crisis.

The move comes after the central bank last month lent a record 489.2 billion euros to 532 banks in a three-year refinancing operation to avert a possible credit crunch.

"Sentiment has soured once again as markets resume their focus on eurozone problems," said Mitul Kotecha, strategist at Credit Agricole in a note to clients.

"Markets are likely to find little respite today, with bond auctions in France and negative press reports about Spain set to garner attention," he told Dow Jones Newswires.

The euro -- which hit an 11-year-low of 98.71 against the yen early this week before rebounding -- remained under pressure.

In early European trade it fetched 99.32 yen and US$1.2938, compared with 99.28 yen and US$1.2941 in New York late Wednesday.

Oil extended its gains after hitting eight-month highs in New York late Wednesday as the European Union moved closer to imposing a ban on the import of Iranian crude over its alleged nuclear weapons programme. Europe is Iran's second-biggest oil customer.

Iran on Wednesday renewed its warning to close off the crucial Strait of Hormuz shipping lane if sanctions are imposed and warned the United States against keeping a naval presence in the oil-rich Gulf, further stoking tensions between the foes.

New York's main contract light sweet crude for delivery in February rose 42 cents to US$103.64 per barrel. The contract on Wednesday jumped to an eight-month high of US$103.74.

Brent North Sea crude for February delivery jumped 77 cents to US$114.47.

Is 'Work It' worst TV show ever?

ABC

"Work It" doesn't work, critics say.

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper

It's hard to remember a new TV show that earned such universally horrible reviews as ABC's "Work It," which premiered last night.

The sitcom focuses on two unemployed men who dress up like women to find jobs. Stars Lee Standish and Amaury Nolasco may have to try that trick soon, because we can't believe this show will stick around long. Here are a few of the best (worst) quotes about the show.

Groin-thwacking pain
"It?s not just that 'Work It' is poorly written, broadly acted and apparently produced without any shame, it?s that any number of people had a chance to say no to the groin-thwack against standards that is this series, but they refused."? --Hollywood Reporter

Bring back The Gap Girls
"As a comedy about men who dress in drag, it makes the Gap Girls on 'Saturday Night Live' look like Shakespeare In The Park."? --Linda Holmes, NPR

Dumb da dumb dumb
"'Work It' is bad dumb, memorably bad dumb, the kind of bad dumb show you will use in years to come as a benchmark for other bad sitcoms."??? --TIME

Ha ha ha. Ha?
"The funniest part of 'Work It' lies in ABC?s press materials, which describe the show as a 'high-concept comedy.'"? --Boston Herald

Nice work if you can get it
"I would probably have to say that the only good thing to come out of this show is that it, momentarily, employed people; writers, actors, production crew, etc."? --IGN TV

Did you watch "Work It"? Was it as bad as the critics say? Tell us on Facebook.

New Year's Day in Japan Brings Twitter to Standstill

16,197-tweet-per-second burst less than record set by Laputa anime last month

Japanese Twitter users sent approximately 16,197 tweets per second at midnight on New Year's Eve to celebrate the arrival of 2012 in Japan, causing many to receive the error message that Twitter was over capacity and eventually leading to the site going down for maintenance. The tweets per second average, however, did not beat the record set on December 9 during a re-airing of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli's 1986 anime film Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

On December 9, Japanese Twitter users set a world record of 25,088 tweets per second during the film. At the moment that the main characters Pazu and Sheeta say the spell word "balse" at the climax of the film, fans across Japan used social websites to say the spell together with the two characters.

When a 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit near Torishima Island more than 300 miles south of Tokyo on New Year's Day at 2:28 p.m. local time, it set off a new wave of Twitter posts in Japan.

Top local sports story of 2011: Brad Benjamin making U.S. Open cut

Sports aren?t like the other major forms of entertainment. Movies, TV, music, plays, books, they are all scripted. We can watch ?It?s A Wonderful Life? 100 times and know in the end George will always find Zuzu?s petals again and Clarence will get his wings. But sports stories can change at any minute.

When the narrative changes most dramatically, it can make for the biggest stories of all. That?s what happened last year. The Rockford Register Star?s top three local sports stories of 2010 were Brad Benjamin becoming the first Rockford native to play in the Masters, Willie Veasley starting for a Butler team that came within two points of winning the NCAA men?s basketball title and Boylan winning its first state football title.

But the ever-changing world of sports means staying on top can also be a big story. Rockford?s sports world was dominated in 2011 by repeat excellence ? and by a retirement that ended the longest-running domination in local sports history.

Here are the top 10 Rock River Valley sports stories for 2011, as voted on by reporters Matt Trowbridge, Emily Tropp, Brenda Young and Jay Taft:

No. 1: Same as the old boss

Brad Benjamin became our first repeat top sports story. He won last year for playing in the Masters. The 2005 Guilford graduate won this year for becoming the first Rockford native to make the cut at the U.S. Open.

Benjamin shot 8-under-par in two rounds and then birdied the first playoff hole in a qualifier just to reach the U.S. Open. Once there, he had to come back at 7:30 a.m. on the third day to make the cut after his second round was halted by darkness with one hole to play.

Benjamin also reached the semifinals of the 111th North & South Amateur, turned pro in September and became the first Rockford golfer to reach the third and final stage of PGA Tour Qualifying School in LaQuinta, Calif.

No. 2: Dakota?s twin champs

Dakota made a statewide name for itself by winning recent state football and wrestling titles. Dakota?s girls joined that success this fall.

The Indians won their first girls state title when they knocked off state power Mount Pulaski 25-16, 25-20 to win the Class 1A volleyball crown.

Two weeks later, Dakota beat Tuscola 41-27 for its third state football title in seven years. Dakota started the season 1-2, but beat defending state champ Lena-Winslow twice in three weeks, including a second-round playoff win, and were the only team to beat Le-Win this year.
?
Jake Apple ran for 377 yards in the state championship game.

No. 3: Two-time Titan champs

While Brad Benjamin repeated as the No. 1 story, Boylan repeated at No. 3. One year after becoming the NIC-10?s first state football champion in 16 years, Boylan joined the 1993-94 Belvidere teams as the NIC-10?s only repeat state football champions.

Boylan stretched its overall winning streak to 28 games and its conference streak to 56 games by winning its sixth consecutive NIC-10 title. Tyreis Thomas, Lamont Toney, Dean Lowry and Peter Cimino led the way as Boylan won more easily in Class 7A than they had the year before in 6A, trailing only once all season, against Harlem.

Thomas ran for 1,606 yards and 24 touchdowns and his two-year total of 3,204 made him the No. 2 rusher in NIC-10 history. Toney set school records with 1,541 yards and 21 TDs passing, plus 2,185 yards and 31 TDs combined rushing and receiving. Lowry signed with Northwestern as a game-changing defensive lineman, and Cimino had four playoff interceptions.

No. 4: Huskies are top dogs
Twice in the previous six years, NIU had come within seconds of winning a MAC title. The Huskies finally broke through this year and won their first MAC title since 1983. They did it with Chandler Harnish throwing for 2,942 yards and running for 1,382. They also did it by breaking a 20-year history of losing close games. NIU had been 21-34 in games decided by five points or fewer since 1990 before winning its last six games this year by 1, 3, 31, 3, 6 and 3 points.

When the Huskies lost the MAC title game in 2005 and 2010, they combined for one victory by five points or fewer. They had four times that many this year alone, including rallying from 20 points down at halftime to edge Ohio 23-20 on the last play for the title.

?We?ve shown we?ve been able to fight and battle through the hardships,? senior linebacker Pat Schiller said. ?That?s what really makes a great team.?

No. 5: Steve Goers retires

Illinois basketball coaching legend Steve Goers hung up his whistle this year after 31 years leading Boylan. Goers announced his retirement in a May 6 news conference.

At the time of his retirement, Goers held the state record for most career coaching wins with 881. After beginning his career at Bardolph, Oswego, LaSalle-Peru and Harvard, Goers took over at Boylan in 1980 and turned the Titans into an area power. His coaching highlights include 26 conference, 28 regional and 17 sectional titles and a state-record 30 consecutive winning seasons. Twenty-six of his last 28 Boylan teams won at least 20 games and three of those teams finished fourth in the state.

Boylan hired former Oregon, Jefferson and Rock Falls coach Mike Winters to replace Goers.

No. 6: Star transfer can?t play

The local basketball community was abuzz this fall when Winnebago?s all-state point guard Marcus Posley started the school year at Auburn. Posley changed his legal guardianship to his grandfather and moved to the Auburn school district.

Most thought Posley transferred so he could play basketball for defending NIC-10 champion Auburn alongside his AAU teammates Fred Van Vleet and LaMark Foote. In truth, Posley needed to replace a class that Winnebago?s system would not allow him to replace in order to play basketball at Ball State University next year.

Because the rest of Pos-ley?s family did not move, the IHSA deemed Posley ineligible. He appealed, but the IHSA upheld its decision two weeks ago.

Despite not playing his senior year, Posley was still offered a scholarship by Ball State. The 6-foot-1 guard, who averaged 19.4 points and 4.5 assists as a junior at Winnebago, signed his Division I letter-of-intent with the Cardinals in November.

No. 7: Auburn 16-0 in NIC-10

Auburn went 16-0 in the conference to become the first of the NIC-10?s nine public school schools to go undefeated in the league in boys basketball in 30 years.

The Knights also won regional and sectional titles. It was the first sectional title for Auburn since 1979. Auburn?s season ended with a 63-51 loss to Glenbard East at the NIU Supersectional.

Auburn was led by junior all-state point guard Fred Van Vleet, who signed his letter-of-intent to play for Wichita State University in November and has led the Knights to a 9-2 start to this season.

No. 8: Three times a champ

Belvidere North became the fifth cross country team in state history to win three straight titles. The Blue Thunder won again despite graduating four runners who had started for both previous state champs.

North edged Glenbard South 110-128 for the Class 2A title at Detweiller Park in Peoria in November. Four of North?s seven runners all finished in the top 25 to earn all-state honors: Tyler Yunk, Paxson Menard, Will Crocker and Garrett Lee. Yunk finished second individually for the second consecutive year.

No. 9: Steve Vee exits on top

Steve Vee finished his 35th and last season as Rock Valley tennis coach by winning his fourth NJCAA Division III national championship. The RVC women, seeded third, dominated at nationals, clinching the title after the semifinal round and finishing with 33 points to 27 for runner-up Mercer (N.J.). The title was the fourth national championship for Vee, two each for RVC?s men?s and women?s teams.

?This has been some kind of ride. I must say, it?s hard to go out like this, but it?s nice to have something like this as your last one to look back on,? Vee said. ?The girls wanted to make this special, and they sure did that. It?s something I will remember forever.?
Five RVC women were named All-Americans after the national tourney: Katy Kurilla (first team and tournament MVP), Nicole Beck (first team), Brianna Todaro (first team), McKenzie McCray (second team) and Alice Swanson (second team).

No. 10: 2 state bowling champs

Harlem won its fifth state girls team bowling title and Guilford its first boys title. Local teams have now won 12 state bowling titles.

?This win means everything to us,? said Harlem?s Sammi Hagerman, who finished sixth individually.

Harlem had just missed a state berth the previous two years, finishing third at sectionals.

Guilford also knew about close calls. The Vikings finished fifth at state in 2010.

?We have been knocking on the door,? Guilford coach Brad Sommer said, ?but those big trophies have always eluded us.?

Not any more.

Community comes to the aid of Rensselaer Boys and Girls Club

RENSSELAER ? An entire community in Rensselaer came together to save their children. ?

It would be impossible to understate the importance of the Rensselaer Boys and Girls Club to that community.??

So, even though it may not be such a big surprise that so many people would rally behind that organization, the surprising thing is how quickly people pitched in to save the club from financial ruin.

There is no question about it, the Rensselaer Boys and Girls Club was dangerously behind the eight ball.

?We were about $75,000 in debt for 2011 and nothing to move forward with in 2012," said Rick Van Vorst.

On the verge of shutting down, the club put out an emergency plea for cash, needing $100,000 by the middle of January but even before December was over with, they got it.

?I wasn't surprised that the community came forward but what I was surprised with is how quickly and how quickly we raised $90,000. It was amazing to me,? said Van Vorst.

The Boys and Girls Club has about 750 registered members, although on a given day there might be about 120 kids stopping by after school for pool, ping pong, or play time.

?I'd like to say thank you for donating and helping to keep this place going because it gives an opportunity not just to me but to a lot of kids,? said Victoria Lee.

An opportunity to a lot of kids, is a godsend to a lot of parents.

The parents were very concerned over the situation here because in some cases the parents would lose their jobs by not having child care services after school,? said Van Vorst.

But the club isn't out of the woods just yet. State funding has essentially dried up and the budget for 2012 has all ready been cut by 20%.

We have to continue to depend on the community as well as some others to look for other sources of revenue. We have to find some new sources of revenue,? said Van Vorst.

Revenue sources that will keep the club open, and keep kids from settling for something less.

?I would probably be at my house just sitting and thinking I should be at the club because it's a really fun place,? said Kaitlynn Cook.

Donors have come forward with $76,000 in hand and $20,000 in pledges and they are confident it is just a matter of days before they reach their goal of $100,000, but they will need continued support into the new year.

UCLA FOOTBALL: Bruins don't find Kraft Hunger Bowl a laughing matter

SAN FRANCISCO - Cue the laugh track, folks.

So many jokes have been told since the announcement of the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl on Dec. 4 that Henny Youngman would be proud. College football writers became Catskills comedians while using UCLA and Illinois as punch lines.

Here are two teams that back-doored into the postseason, further proof the bowl system is a farce, two teams with interim head coaches who will not be retained, two teams that have elicited more guffaws than a season of "Saturday Night Live."

Just don't tell the players.

"We're both teams who've had up-and-down seasons, both coaches have been fired, we're both in the same spot," UCLA junior quarterback Kevin Prince said. "And in bowl games like this, it's the team who wants to win it the most that does. The team that wants to be here.

"We have to make sure that we're that team."

The teams may find themselves in similar circumstances, but their respective paths varied greatly.

UCLA's season was a rollercoaster, the peaks and valleys of a mountain range, the ride so nauseating fans turned purple in the face. Just when all appeared lost and a 48-12 loss to Arizona in Week 7 indicating a tailspin, the Bruins surprised everyone by winning two in a row over Cal and Arizona State and eventually headed to USC in Week 12 on a 3-1 streak.

What followed was nothing short of a disaster - a 50-0 loss to the Trojans that spelled the beginning of the

end of the Rick Neuheisel era, followed by a 49-31 loss to Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game, after which offensive coordinator Mike Johnson assumed the role of interim head coach.

In the beginning some players were questionable about being at school for another month, but now they are "all in," running back Johnathan Franklin said.

"You look at the last two games we played, 50-0, then losing to Oregon to go to the Rose Bowl, and we definitely need a win. Losing? Being 6-8? No," Franklin said.

Illinois, meanwhile, had one big rise and a similar fall.

The Illini started the season 6-0 behind a relentless defense that ranks seventh out of 120 FBS teams in total defense, fourth in pass defense, ninth in sacks and fifth in tackles for loss. To that point, Illinois' offense had been keeping up its end of the bargain while ranking 33rd nationally.

Then came a six-game slide against a brutal schedule that included losses to Ohio State, Wisconsin, Penn State and Michigan and, ultimately, the termination of Ron Zook a day after Neuheisel's firing and the subsequent promotion of defensive coordinator Vic Koenning as interim head coach.

"We have a clear mind of who we're playing and what we're going up against," UCLA junior cornerback Andrew Abbott said. "We know what their season was like. We respect them, but this game is more about us. It starts at home."

It starts at home and, more specifically, it starts up front.

UCLA (6-7, 4-3) picked a poor time to have its offensive line reeling from injury and suspension as Whitney Mercilus leads a ferocious front four into AT&T Park. UCLA junior offensive tackle Brett Downey, a former walk-on, will make his first start against the Illini defensive end who led the nation in sacks (14<MD+,%30,%55,%70>1/<MD-,%0,%55,%70>2) and forced fumbles (nine).

Downey will get a little help, though.

"It will be a test, and a lot of it will fall on my shoulders," Prince said. "I'll have to make sure we're in the right protection and that guys know where they're going. It's going to be on me that when we are throwing the ball, that I'm getting it out fast and that I know where I'm going with it."

So often this season, that has been Nelson Rosario.

The senior wide receiver perhaps has the most to gain among the Bruins, already over the 1,000-yard mark but with a chance to boost his NFL draft stock with an impressive showing.

And Prince is sure to go to him early and often because that's what you do when everything around you is tumbling down. You stick with what you know and who you know, and hope everyone rises to the occasion.

And you try to make everybody stop laughing.

"It's been weird; any time you have a coach who's fired, it's strange," Prince said. "The way we have practiced has been different. The way we're coached is different. Being able to adjust to that and get our focus on to this game has been tough, but I think we've done it.

"We're here, we're in San Francisco, and we have the feeling that the game is right here for us."
