Katy Perry 'Sore And Exhausted' After 'Part Of Me' Video

'I know how to carry my weight a little bit more,' she says of military training for the just-premiered clip.
By Kara Warner, with reporting by James Montgomery

One of the many reasons to admire Katy Perry is for how honest she is with her fans in revealing how she struggles with the same mundane annoyances in life that we all do, like watching what we eat and exercising.

During MTV First: Katy Perry" on Tuesday, when Perry premiered her new "Part of Me" video, the pop star revealed that during the holidays, she gives herself a free pass and goes into full-on "Stay Puft Marshmallow mode." So she had some preparation to do before shooting the combat-heavy clip, going on a strict diet and exercise program.

"I got on a meal plan. I'm still on that meal plan, although I cheat a little bit — I have to live!" she admitted. "I got a fantastic person to work me out and get me into really good shape."

Perry said she performed a lot of the stunts in the video, including learning how to flip and carry people.

"On the actual base, I did a lot of things. I flipped girls, I learned how to fireman-carry," she said of the maneuver used to rescue wounded or unconscious victims of fires or other accidents. "I know how to carry my weight a little bit more," she said, before admitting there was one task she wasn't able to master.

"One thing I can't do, and I hope that there are other people out there that feel the same way, is climb a rope," she said. "Oh my gosh, it's so hard to climb rope! It's all about grip and arms. I tried five or six times on set, but I had to cheat that shot. My hands were shaking."

Though the production of "Part of Me" was a lot of hard work — actual blood, sweat and tears — Perry talked at length about how much she learned from the Marines she worked with.

"This music video, as much as I was sore and exhausted, I was so educated on people in the service who I've always respected, but this time the respect goes beyond and above anything I could've imagined," she said. "The stuff that they go through, the loyalties and strengths that they all possess, it seems like they are seriously, not to sound weird, but it's seriously the heart of America."

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Event at Eastland Mall

P1000010

Dr. Waller, Dave Westrich, Captain Colon

It?s amazing how much I didn?t know about colon cancer and how much I have learned since I got involved in the Colorectal Cancer Event that took place at Eastland Mall this past Thursday through Sunday (March 15-18).? More important is how necessary it is that YOU get a colonoscopy to maintain your health!? The colorectal cancer awareness event was not only incredibly informative and helpful, but it was entertaining and fun, as well.? Coco, the collossal colon was fun to crawl through, especially for the younger set, and the displays and demonstrations were fascinating.? The Colon Club is doing such a great service educating all of us about colorectal cancer prevention.? Kudos also go to Ohio Valley Colon and Rectal Surgeons for helping to spread the message.

U.S. builders started construction on new homes in February at a slightly slower pace, but an increase in permits indicates that work will pick up in the coming months. The Commerce Department reported that housing starts fell 1.1% to an annual rate of 698,000 last month, compared with an upwardly revised 706,000 in January. New construction of single-family homes, which account for three-quarters of the housing market, dropped nearly 10% to an annual rate of 457,000 however, compared to a year ago, is higher by 18%. Construction on multi-dwelling units such as apartment buildings surged higher by nearly 29% to an annual rate of 233,000. Work Permits to begin new construction climbed 5.1% during February to an annual rate of 717,000, striking the highest level since the middle of the recession during October 2008. Single-family home permits increased 4.9% to an annual rate of 472,000. Permits for condominiums and apartments rose a mere 3.3% to a rate of 219,000.

Territorial new construction statistics: Midwest rose 3%; South rose 1.5%; Northeast fell 12.3% and West fell 5.9%. While the housing market remains in a severe slump as the worst seen since the government began record-keeping in the early 1960s, there is evidence of signs of a slow motion improvement with sales of new and existing homes have been on the rise since the end of the last summer. In the past four months, housing starts have averaged an annual rate of 697,000; striking the best stretch of home building since the final months of 2008.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner said Tuesday that troubled European countries should take a steady, multi-year approach to fixing their budgets. ?The path of fiscal consolidation should be gradual with a multi-year phase-in of reforms,? said Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner in testimony prepared for a House Financial Services Committee hearing. ?If every time economic growth disappoints governments are forced to cut spending or raise taxes immediately to make up for the impact of weaker growth on deficits, this would risk a self-reinforcing negative spiral of growth-killing austerity.? Geithner added that he was encouraged by the progress Europe was making.

The Federal Reserve and its district banks earned the second-highest amount in its history during 2011 as the central bank profited from increasing its balance sheet to boost the U.S. economy. On Tuesday, the Federal Reserve and its district banks reported that it earned $77.4 billion, down from $81.7 billion in 2010. The historical earnings allowed the Fed to distribute $75.4 billion to the U.S. Treasury which was also the second-highest level ever paid. The Feds balance sheet hit level of $2.92 trillion in 2011, up from $2.43 trillion in 2010. The earnings were derived primarily from $83.6 billion in interest income on securities acquired through open market operations, from Treasury securities, federal agency and government-sponsored enterprise mortgage-backed securities, and GSE debt securities, as reported by the Fed.

Because the Fed effectively pays for those securities out of money it created out of thin air, the so-called quantitative easing programs are extremely profitable. A Federal Reserve official on Tuesday said the central bank doesn?t pay attention to profit when it conducts its operation. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and other policy makers have said they would stop the programs when the U.S. economy is strong enough, though there?s considerable debate over when that will happen, and Fed officials haven?t ruled out buying more securities. The Fed repeated that it doesn?t expect to record a loss on any of its emergency loan programs. On its portfolio of assets, unrealized losses totaled $4.3 billion, which the Fed attributed to ?instrument-specific credit risk? on commercial and residential mortgage loans; the Fed earned $428 million on the securities it did sell.

ECB data showed on Tuesday, for a second week, the Euro-system?s balance sheet shrank but remained close to the high hit after the European Central Bank?s second three-year loan operation. The Euro-system consists of the ECB and the 17 euro-zone national central banks. By the end of last week, the balance sheet fell to EUR2.986 trillion from EUR3.006 trillion the previous Friday. The balance sheet fell by EUR19.488 billion, compared with a drop of EUR17.38 billion in previous week. On March 6, ECB?s balance sheet soared to a record EUR3.023 trillion after banks tapped the ECB in late February for more than half a trillion in three-year loans. ECB?s balance sheet was EUR1.046 trillion larger than a year earlier and now amounts to 32% of euro-zone gross domestic product.

In the week ending March 16, net lending to credit institutions increased by EUR89.1 billion to EUR172.6 billion after an increase of EUR10.6 billion a week earlier. Last Wednesday, a main refinancing operation of EUR17.5 billion matured and a new one of EUR42.2 billion was settled and fixed-term, one-week deposits of EUR219.5 billion matured and new deposits in the amount of EUR218 billion were collected. On the same day, a longer-term refinancing operation of EUR14.3 billion matured and a new one of EUR9.8 billion was settled. Due to settled purchases under the ECB?s covered bond-buying program, Eurosystem holdings of securities for monetary policy purposes rose a mere EUR400 million last week to EUR283.4 billion. under the Securities Markets program, the value of bond purchases totaled EUR217.8 billion by the end of last week. The value of the Euro-system?s gold and gold receivables holdings remained unchanged.

Complaints from foreign officials about the potential effect of U.S. rules to prevent banks from making risky bets with their own money, suggesting it would not hurt liquidity in international markets was disputed again by U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Tuesday. From counterparts in Europe, Japan, Canada and elsewhere, U.S. officials have come under fire publicly and privately in recent months over the so-called Volcker Rule to prevent proprietary trading by banks. Geithner said the U.S. is reviewing concerns, but downplayed the potential for any dire consequences. ?I do not believe, that the rule as drafted presents a meaningful risk to liquidity or credit in those countries,? Geithner said.

In the last two months, a number of foreign officials visiting Washington have made a point to bring up their concerns about the Volcker Rule. As currently proposed, the primary worry is that the U.S. rules would discourage financial firms from trading foreign sovereign debt while providing an exemption for U.S. debt which could put a damper on liquidity in already fragile sovereign debt markets, critics contend. Bank of Japan Deputy Gov. Kiyohiko Nishimura told a group of bankers meeting in Washington earlier this month, ?The Volcker rule is intended to restrict the proprietary trading by banking entities; however, the rule could have significant implications for important market-making activities, as well as market liquidity.?

MMA & UFC Style Training In the Westminster, Broomfield, Brighton ...

"After throwing around the idea of training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for a few months, I finally decided to go and try it out. I initially started training at a gym that a few friends trained at and quickly realized that it was not the place for me. The gym was dark, the people were not welcoming, and the facility was small.

A coworker of mine knew that I had started training and began to look at gyms as well and found Zingano's. He mentioned it to me, but I was hesitant to go to a new place not knowing anyone because often times these places are filled with people who have something to prove. After talking about it a bit, we made a phone call. The phone was answered by Master Zingano himself and he was extremely welcoming and informative. He insisted we come over and check out the facility and meet the people, so we did.

When we first walked in, we were immediately greeted by several students who were finishing up a class. This was surprising to us as we were used to being looked at as "new guys." We were introduced to Master Zingano who quickly made us feel at home. He showed us the facility, answered all of our questions, and made us feel like we were going to be part of a family.

We both decided to go through the trial period and were given loaner gi's so we could participate. Our initial trial was for 30 days and after the first three days, I knew this was the place for me. I signed up and began training 4 days a week.

I was amazed at the family atmosphere this place provided. I was immediately accepted and was treated like I had been there my whole life. The coaches were awesome, the facility was always clean, and the classes were top notch every time. At first I did Jiu-Jitsu only, but quickly realized that there was so much more to learn at Zingano's. I started doing MMA, Muay Thai, and wrestling as well.

They have the best Jiu-Jitsu coaches, the wrestling coach is an Olympic medalist, the Muay Thai coach is a living legend in the sport, and Master Zingano is an extremely respected Black Belt with a wealth of knowledge.

I have been training at Zingano's for over four years and have made relationships that will last a lifetime. I have had many great experiences myself and have witnessed many others with other people. I have seen people come in and make complete transformations in their lives regarding weight, self confidence, and relationships. Master Zingano cares about each one of his students and truly loves what he does. There is not a single coach that ever treats anyone as if they are any less then them and everyone is family. "

"Hands down, this has been one of the best experiences of my life."

- Shawn C.

"I have trained at gyms across the US from the West Coast to the East Coast and the things that I look for when I first walk into a gym are these things:

Programs: Does the gym offer what I am interested in?
Level of instruction: If I'm paying for a service, what is the level of instruction that I am receiving? Is the staff friendly and helpful in guiding me towards my goal?
Facilities: Are the facilites clean? Do they have the neccesasry equipment to adequately train everyone? Is there appeal in how everything is set up?
Organization of classes: Is the material organized and presented in a manner that anyone can learn?

Programs offered (5/5): Durring the 4 years since I started to training to the time that I left, the number of programs offered has evolved significantly. The addition of key coaches in the areas of Muay Thai, wrestling, and MMA and transformed Zingano BJJ from a Jiu Jitsu school to a formadible Jiu Jitsu/MMA/fitness gym. The kids program is great for kids as young as 5 to start training. You can't find a more complete gym in Colorado to train at.

Level of Instruction (5/5): The level of instruction across the board is top notch. Master Zingano has done a great job with his instructors in instilling them with the art of teaching. Every instructor that I had was able to clearly and consicily convey whatever technique was being taught. In addition, they are all extremely friendly. I think a lot of people are intimidated of trying a sport that they've never done before. Weather its BJJ, MMA, or Muy Thai, these instructors take that fear away by promoting an ego free environment and are approachable by everyone.

Class organization (5/5): This one was a big one for me. I've been to many gyms where it was just a free-for-all when it comes to class organization and what is taught. At Zingano BJJ the classes are broken up into beginner, intermediate, and advanced depending on your level of experience. I believe this helps you learn quicker and more efficiently by being able to train with people at your level. Also, because classes are so organized there isn't a lot of down time and the flow from teaching one technique to the next is seamless. This alone, in my opinion, made me feel like I'm getting my money's worth and demonstrated that these guys know what they're doing."

?Tom?seen Foley's Irish Times? Is a Lively Blend of Irish Folk Tales ...

IrishTimesPOSTER2 KirbyTheater2012 804x10241 Tom?seen Foleys Irish Times Is a Lively Blend of Irish Folk Tales, Stories, Music, and Dance

The Kirby Theater Performing Arts Series presented "Tom?seen Foley's Irish Times" on March 16th in Kirby Civic Auditorium in Roxboro, NC

EDITOR?S NOTE: Dawn Reno Langley is a Durham, NC-based author who writes novels, poetry, children?s books, and nonfiction books on many subjects, as well as theater reviews. She is also Dean of General Education and Developmental Studies at Piedmont Community College in Roxboro, where she oversees the theater program at the Kirby Cultural Arts Complex. She is also a member of the Person County Arts Council; but she wrote this review at my request, because I thought that this March 16th show should be reviewed and there were no other critics available. ? R.W.M.

Some people celebrate St. Patrick?s Day with green beer in pubs, while others gather for a home-cooked boiled dinner with a juicy hambone, white potatoes, and a large head of cabbage. But Triangle theatergoers in headed to the historic Kirby Theater in Roxboro, NC to hurtle back in time with Irish folk tales, music, and dancing. Tom?seen Foley?s Irish Times show visited the theater on Friday, March 16th, for a one-night show, just in time for the St. Patty?s Day holiday.

Irish Times opened with a rousing Irish jig, performed by two young dancers currently competing on the world stage. The award-winning dancers stepped and leaped, Riverdance style, across the stage as if a puppet master controlled their movements from on high. Behind them, seated in simple chairs on a backlit stage adorned with a reflected Celtic knot, three musicians created a lively song in much the same way as Irish musicians have done in parlors throughout Ireland for hundreds of years.

Clad in rough wool pants, suspenders, and a plain collarless cotton shirt, as his Irish ancestors may have worn while gathering peat from the bog, emcee and storyteller Tom?seen Foley acted as a narrator of sorts for the evening. Born on a small farm in the remote parish of Teampall an Ghleannt?in in the West of Ireland, Foley also directs the troupe, and has toured the world with this show, as well as A Celtic Christmas.

Sitting to the side, he looked on as his troop of five performers took turns demonstrating traditional Irish dances, playing Celtic folk music, singing, and cracking jokes with each other. When he took center stage, it was to relate a tale from his childhood or story relevant to Irish folk history, usually beginning with, ?My dear grandmother told me ?.? His tousled white hair and affable smiling face epitomized the stereotype of the Irishman most Americans would recognize as ?from the old land.?

The well-timed meshing of storytelling, dance, and music enthralled the Kirby Theater audience; and they soon began beating the floor with their own enthusiastic footsteps as the troop drew them into the world of Irish mists, foggy lowlands, and mythical creatures described by Foley in his homespun stories. When Foley finished a quick tale, singer Kathleen Keane followed with her soaring clear voice and the lilting sounds of her world-renowned flute.

Keane?s tin whistle has been heard on the soundtracks of such movies as The Road to Perdition (Tom Hanks), Backdraft (Ron Howard), and Cinderella Man (Russell Crowe). Her glossy dark hair and bright green eyes underscore her Chicago-Irish background, but her skill on the tin whistle and the violin speak of her love for her family?s native land.

Kathleen Keane is a multi-talented artist. Not only does she sing and play several instruments, but she also is a world-renowned dancer, trained by the famed Riverdance choreographer Michael Flatley.

Accompanying Keane was the Grammy Award-winning guitarist William Coulter, whose fingers flew over the frets in frantic pace to deliver a syncopated sound that kept the audience?s toes tapping. Coulter is known for a collection of Henry Mancini songs played on guitar entitled ?The Pink Guitar,? which won a Grammy in 2005. More recently, he has produced a CD entitled ?The Road Home,? which is a critically acclaimed solo project. He has been performing and touring for more than 20 years.

But the most interesting music of Tom?seen Foley?s Irish Times was produced by an instrument called the Uilleann Pipes, played by Brian Bigley. Like the bagpipes, the Uilleann Pipes relies on a bellows system, only this instrument?s bellows are placed under the player?s arms, thus Bigley must coordinate his two elbows and alternately squeeze each of the bellows in order to produce a continuous sound.

Bigley comes from Cleveland originally, and has worked with various pipe-makers to learn the ancient art. He now makes his own instruments, and is an accomplished reed-maker. In addition, he is world-class Irish step dancer, having competed at the World Championships in Glasgow and Killarney.

Though some might compare Tom?seen Foley?s Irish Times to the Riverdance spectaculars, this group of talented musicians, dancers, and singers performs a more down-to-earth and neighborly show, which is perfect for the smaller venues, such as the Kirby Theater. By the time their jaunty songs, melancholy pipes, and traditional storytelling ended, the theater audience had noticeably relaxed, thoroughly enjoying their journey to the world celebrated each year on March 17th by the Irish and everyone who ?takes on the green? for that one day.

(AP) ? The growing national attention ? and outcry ? over the case of an unarmed black teen in Florida who was fatally shot by a neighborhood watch captain has culminated with the federal government's announcement that it will launch an investigation.

The announcement late Monday by the Justice Department followed a day of protests calling for the arrest of George Zimmerman, 28, who claims he shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin last month in self-defense during a confrontation in a gated community in Sanford, Fla. Police have described Zimmerman as white; his family says he is Hispanic and not racist.

Zimmerman spotted Martin as he was patrolling his neighborhood on a rainy evening last month and called 911 to report a suspicious person. Against the advice of the 911 dispatcher, Zimmerman then followed Martin, who was walking home from a convenience store with a bag of Skittles in his pocket.

"The department will conduct a thorough and independent review of all the evidence and take appropriate action at the conclusion of the investigation," the agency said in an emailed statement.

The federal agency said it is sending its community relations service this week to Sanford to meet with authorities, community officials and civil rights leaders "to address tension in the community."

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton is expected to join Sanford city leaders in a Tuesday evening town hall meeting to discuss with residents how the investigation is being handled. Earlier Monday, students held rallies on the campus of Florida A&M University in Tallahassee and outside the Seminole County Criminal Justice Center, where prosecutors are reviewing the case to determine if charges should be filed.

Yet authorities may be hamstrung by a state law that allows people to defend themselves with deadly force.

Prosecutors may not be able to charge Zimmerman because of changes to state law in 2005. Under the old law, people could use deadly force in self-defense only if they had tried to run away or otherwise avoid the danger.

Under the new law, there is no duty to retreat and it gives a Floridian the right "to stand his or her ground and meet force with force, including deadly force," if he feels threatened. "I don't think a man who exited his vehicle after the 911 dispatcher told him to stay inside the car can claim self-defense," Carl McPhail, a 28-year-old Barry University law school student, said at the Sanford rally.

The 70 protesters at the Sanford rally chanted "What if it was your son?" and held posters saying, "This is not a race issue." Many carried Skittles.

Martin's parents and other advocates have said the shooter would have been arrested had he been black.

"You would think that Sanford is still in the 1800s claiming that this man can call self-defense for shooting an unarmed boy," restaurant owner Linda Tillman said.

U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown, D-Fla., along with members of the Congressional Black Caucus and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, had asked the U.S. Department of Justice to review the case, and White House spokesman Jay Carney said earlier Monday during a briefing that officials there were aware of what happened.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Trayvon Martin's family," Carney said at the time. "But obviously we're not going to wade into a local law enforcement matter."

A message to Brown's spokesman late Monday was not immediately returned.

Late Monday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott directed the state Department of Law Enforcement to help local authorities in their investigation. The governor said in a memo to department Commissioner Gerald Bradley that the circumstances surrounding the death "have caused significant concern within the Sanford community and the state."

Prosecutors can have a hard time making a case if there is no one else around to contradict a person who claims self-defense, said David Hill, a criminal defense attorney in Orlando. So far, Sanford police have said there is no evidence to contradict Zimmerman's claims.

"If there is nobody around and you pull a gun, you just say, 'Hey, I reasonably believed I was under imminent attack. Hey, sorry. Too bad. But you can't prosecute me,'" Hill said, somewhat tongue-in-cheek.

Gun control advocates said the case is emblematic of permissive gun laws in Florida, which was among the first states to allow residents to carry concealed weapons. Florida was the first state to pass a "Stand Your Ground" law, which has been dubbed a "Shoot First" law by gun control advocates.

Currently, about half of all U.S. states have similar laws, said Brian Malte, legislative director of the Brady Campaign, which describes itself as the nation's largest organization dedicated to the prevention of gun violence.

"It's coming to dangerous fruition," Malte said. "There are more states like Florida." The "Stand Your Ground" law's legislative sponsor, Florida Rep. Dennis Baxley, said it wasn't written to give people the power to pursue and confront others.

"That's not what this legislation does," said Baxley, a Republican. "Unfortunately, every time there is an unfortunate incident involving a firearm, they think it's about this law, and it's not."
